AI visibility

People ask ChatGPT and Perplexity before they open a search box, and Google answers above its own results. Here is how to find out whether you are mentioned, and what changes it.

The surface that replaced the click

A growing share of questions never reach a results page. Someone asks a model, gets an answer, and acts on it. If your brand is not in that answer, you were not considered — and unlike a ranking, there is no position ten to console you. You are either cited or you are not.

This is not the death of search, and the people saying so are selling something. It is a new surface with its own rules, sitting alongside the old one. The useful question is not whether it replaces Google but whether you appear in it, which you can check today.

What gets cited

Across the citations I have looked at, the pattern is consistent enough to plan around:

  • Pages that answer the question directly, near the top, in plain sentences. Models quote sentences, not pages.

  • Structure a machine can parse. Clear headings, real lists, question-shaped subheads.

  • Specific, checkable claims. Numbers, dates, named methods. Vague marketing copy gives a model nothing to lift.

  • Sources that already have standing on the topic — which is the ordinary authority problem, unchanged.

Notably absent: keyword density, word count, and most of what on-page checklists still measure.

SEO and AEO are mostly the same job

Answer engine optimisation is a useful phrase for a keyword and a misleading one for a strategy. The work that gets you cited — clear answers, real structure, claims you can defend — is the work that has always earned rankings. What changes is measurement. You cannot check a position, because there is no position. You check whether you are mentioned, for which questions, and which pages get cited instead of yours.

Where to start

Check first, then change something. Run your brand and your three main topics through the AI answer checker to see which engines mention you and which pages they cite instead. The gap between what gets cited and what you have published is your work queue, and it is usually shorter than people expect — often a matter of answering a question you already answer, but higher up the page and in a plainer sentence.

What not to bother with

A market has appeared for AI visibility products that mostly re-report what a manual check would tell you. Before paying for one, run the check yourself and see whether the output changes any decision you were going to make. Often it does not, and the honest answer is that you need to write a clearer page rather than buy a dashboard.

Ignore anyone offering to get you into AI answers through a technical trick. There is no schema markup that makes a model cite you and no file you can upload. What gets cited is a clear answer on a page with standing, which is unglamorous and takes the same work it always did.
