How to find the sources AI answers cite

Find the sites and pages AI answers rely on for the questions that matter to you, then use those patterns to decide what to create, update, or influence.

AI answers cite different sources depending on the question, but patterns start to emerge when you look across a set of related searches.

The useful question is not just whether your brand appears. It is which sources keep getting cited, what kinds of pages they are, and what they have that you do not.

You can investigate this manually by asking the same set of questions across the AI engines you care about and recording what comes back.

What is the difference between an AI mention and a citation?

A mention and a citation tell you different things:

  • A mention means your brand appears in the answer.

  • A citation means a page is referenced as a source.

For this exercise, focus on citations. They give you something specific to investigate: the source, page, information, and type of content being used.

Track mentions separately. Your brand can appear without your site being cited, and your site can be cited without your brand being prominent in the answer.

How do you find which sources AI answers cite?

Start with 10–15 questions that represent how someone would actually research, compare, or choose within your market.

Run each question across the AI engines you want to evaluate and record:

  • the question

  • the domains cited

  • the specific pages cited

  • the type of page: article, product page, comparison, forum, documentation, review, etc.

  • whether your brand is mentioned

  • whether your own site is cited

Use a fresh conversation for each question where possible. Previous questions can influence later answers and make the results harder to compare.

You are not trying to establish a precise citation rate from 15 questions. You are looking for patterns in who gets cited, for what, and where.

What can AI citation patterns tell you?

Say a project management company tests 15 questions people ask while comparing software.

Across those answers, one software review site is cited repeatedly for comparisons, Reddit appears for questions about real-world experience, vendor documentation appears for integrations and technical capabilities, and several individual blogs appear only once.

That pattern tells you more than whether your company appeared.

The review site may be influencing comparison questions. Reddit may be supplying firsthand experience the vendor sites do not provide. Documentation may be the preferred source when the question requires a specific product fact.

Now you have something useful to investigate: what information is each source providing, and where does your own site have a legitimate reason to be part of the answer?

What should you look for in AI citation data?

Look for three things:

Repeated sources. Which domains appear across multiple questions? A source appearing repeatedly is much more interesting than a one-off citation.

Repeated page types. Are the answers consistently citing reviews, comparisons, documentation, forums, product pages, or another type of source?

Your gaps. Where are other sources being cited but your site is absent? Do you already have a page that should answer the question, or is the information genuinely missing?

Do not stop at counting citations. The useful question is why that source is useful for that particular answer.

What should you do when another source gets cited instead of you?

Start with the cited page. Do not immediately create a new one.

Look at what it provides for that particular question. Is the information more specific? Does it compare options? Include original data? Provide firsthand experience? Answer something your page avoids? Or is the value partly that it comes from an independent third party?

Then decide what kind of gap you actually have:

  • You already have the right page: improve it.

  • The information is missing from an existing page: add it where it belongs.

  • The question represents a distinct need: consider creating a new page.

  • Independent sources dominate: consider whether third-party visibility matters more than another page on your own site.

  • The source has evidence you do not: determine whether you can produce useful evidence of your own.

  • The results are inconsistent: collect more data before changing anything.

A citation gap tells you where to investigate. It does not automatically tell you what to create.

How reliable is a manual AI citation check?

Treat a manual check as research, not a precise visibility measurement.

AI answers can change between runs, users, engines, and over time. Fifteen questions run once can reveal useful patterns, but they are not enough to establish a reliable citation rate or trend.

The strongest findings are usually structural: the same domains appearing repeatedly, certain page types dominating, or clear gaps in your own coverage.

Do not make a strategy decision because one source appeared in one answer.

Which questions should you test?

Use questions that reflect real customer decisions, not just category keywords.

Include a mix of:

  • broad discovery questions

  • comparisons and alternatives

  • specific requirements or constraints

  • product or service evaluation questions

  • questions someone asks close to making a decision

For example, “best ergonomic desk solutions” is broad and generic. “Is a standing desk worth it if I only work from home two days a week?” represents a specific decision.

Do not skew the entire set toward one type of question. You will end up measuring the sources that serve that intent rather than understanding the broader citation landscape.

How often should you check AI citations?

If you want to see whether the results change, rerun the same core questions.

Changing the question set every time makes it difficult to tell whether the citation landscape changed or the test changed.

You do not need to check constantly. Repeat the analysis periodically, or more frequently when you are actively testing changes and want to see whether citation patterns move.

What should you do with the citation data?

Start with the questions that matter to the business.

For each important question where your site is missing, identify:

  1. which sources are being cited instead

  2. what type of page or source they are

  3. what information they contribute to the answer

  4. whether you already have a page that should provide it

  5. whether the opportunity is on your site or somewhere else

Then decide whether to update an existing page, create something new, improve your evidence, pursue third-party visibility, or do nothing.

The AI answer checker runs the same questions across engines and keeps the history. The citation gap analyzer helps investigate sources being cited when your site is not. The guide on checking whether AI answers mention your brand covers mentions versus citations in more depth.

The goal is not to get cited everywhere. It is to understand who is shaping the answers that matter to your business, why, and where you have a real opportunity to become one of those sources.
